Duck Dynasty's Miss Kay Robertson: Phil and I Had Alan Out of Wedlock
Miss Kay is coming clean! Duck Dynasty‘s matriarch and the rest of the Robertson brood have always touted their strong morals, religious piety, and well-defined family values, but even they have their little secrets. In the brand-new, exclusive Duck Dynasty collector’s issue from Us Weekly, Phil Robertson‘s wife of nearly five decades reveals that she and her husband weren’t legally married when they had their first child, Alan—which means he was born out of wedlock.
“Well, this is the first time I’ve shared this, aside from giving my testimony [in church],” Miss Kay tells Us exclusively. “When I made a vow to God and to [Phil], it was March 22, 1964.” (She was 16 at the time.)
In her mind, that was the day they committed to spending the rest of their lives together. On paper, however, their wedding day was much later. “It wasn’t legal,” she admits. “That’s the truth. We didn’t do the legal papers until April 11, 1968, after Alan, my oldest, was born. Alan says, ‘Yeah, I would be the B [bastard] in the family.'”
“But I want to tell you something,” she adds. “My heart and my vow to God was true from the first day.”

Indeed, Miss Kay is just as in love with Phil as she was almost 50 years ago. “I love that he’s a man’s man and a take-charge guy,” the A&E star, 66, tells Us of her husband, 68, with whom she has three other sons, Jase, Willie, and Jep. “But what’s not talked about is how kind, gentle, and good he is. I can’t tell you how many times he’s fixed me breakfast in bed.”
Their wedding date is just a technicality—and, occasionally, an inside joke. “Now, the family laughs about it,” she tells Us. “People ask, ‘When was your mama’s wedding?’ and the boys say, ‘Which, the pioneer wedding or the regular wedding?'”
