She Looks So Much Like Me: Coko Sends SWV Fans a Tease When She Taps This Singer to Play Her i
During a 2017 interview, Cheryl “Coko” Gamble, of the R&B trio SWV, said a biopic on the group could be coming, and it’s something they were negotiating at the time.
Now the group — which also includes
Tamara “Taj” George and Leanne “Lelee” Lyons — have hinted at someone who will play Gamble, the lead singer, although that hasn’t been confirmed by a network or an outside entity.
And that person is R&B songstress Sevyn Streeter, whom Gamble posted a photo of on Sunday, Nov. 10.
“Me & my baby @sevyn ❤️ She has to play me in the SWV biopic!” wrote Gamble. “She looks so much like me. ❤️ #SWV #Sevyn.”
George also shared a photo of herself and her two other group members accompanied by Streeter.
“Guess who’s playing Coko in the SWV Biopic?” wrote George next to the image, which shows Streeter sprawled across the group’s laps.
And another connection Streeter has to the group is that her 2017 single “Anything U Want,” featuring Wiz Khalifa, Jeremih & Ty Dolla $ign, sampled SWV’s 1992 cut “Anything.”
SWV formed in New York City in the late ’80s as a gospel group, then saw huge success out the gate once their 1992 debut “It’s About Time” was released. The album includes the hits “Weak,” “I’m so Into You,” as well as “Right Here.”
After breaking up in 1998, the trio starred in We TV’s “SWV: Reunited” in 2014, which ran for two seasons. Then, in 2016, they released their fifth studio album, “Still,” after dropping its lead single “Ain’t No Man.”
Other music biopics coming on groups from the ’90s include one on Salt-N-Pepa, which will be a limited series on Lifetime to air sometime in 2020, and Xscape, who recorded new music for the project, has one coming too.
